Bucking all trends, Ildikó Enyedi's Cannes Caméra d'Or-winning film takes us back to the last New Year's Eve of the 19th century, when most people still looked forward to the new century with a childlike naivety. They believed a brave new world was upon them in which time and space could be conquered with the help of technology. On New Year's Eve 1899, Dóra and Lili, a pair of twins separated since infancy and having followed separate paths, arrive in Hungary at the same time on the Orient Expre...ss, together with the 20th century. Dóra is a reckless small-time swindler, Lili an anarchist. They get off the train at the same time, but still they do not meet. The strange aristocrat Z, a slave to the science, technical innovations and ideas of the new century, gets to know the two girls separately, who - fused into one - represent for him the perfect woman. In their sometimes diverging, sometimes converging story of light, evoking the magical films of the period and Edison's achievements, Enyedi undertook nothing less than the quest for "happiness,” claiming back from the century of genocide the wonder of existence in a constantly changing world.
