From the mid 50s to the late 70s, the greatest American jazz artists toured the world thanks to the American Department of State as a means of confronting Soviet propaganda that implied America was a cultural barbarian. The idea came from a Harlem senator, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. who said it was pointless trying to compete with the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre and that it would be wiser to concentrate on a genre that is pure America, one with which the Soviets could not compete and yet was full of lif...e. An article in the New York Times in 1955 declared that jazz was the country’s supersonic weapon. These often lengthy tours contributed to creating a positive image for America in the world.
