This guest performance of the Dezső Kosztolányi Theatre from Subotica, which many regard as the finest Hungarian-language theatre outside the mother country today, promises an unsettling, unforgettable evening for devotees of meaty, intense artistic experiences. The show is conceived in tribute to the Vojvodina poet János Sziveri, who died aged only 35. Based on his major oratorical work Babel, the performance expresses - through the tragic fate of the poet forced, already gravely ill, to leave ...his homeland - eternally valid ideas about the nature of persecution and human suffering, the defenceless nature of dying, and human dignity transcending intolerable pain. This production taking the text of the Sziveri work as its basis is rendered harrowingly authentic by the live music of Árpád Bakos, at once sublime and infernal, and the playing of the actors, which is devoid of poses and mannerisms.
