The title of this concert might well be "a meeting of nations,” since its stars are two Japanese artists with multiple ties to Hungary. The career of Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi began in 1974 with his victory in the first International Conductors' Competition on Hungarian Television. The conductor returns regularly and also served for many years as the principle conductor of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra. On the 40th anniversary of his triumph In spring 2014, he gave seven concerts with ...the Hungary's most renowned classical ensembles. At the gala concert, he conducted the MÁV Symphony Orchestra, which he has a special affinity for.
Miyuji Kaneko, whose mother is Hungarian, began his piano studies at the Béla Bartók Music School in Vác, continuing at the Special School for Exceptional Young Talents of the Liszt Academy of Music, and graduating from the Tokyo College of Music. Since then, he has gone on to become a global star and performed in many countries of Europe, often with Kobayashi himself as conductor. We have heard Tchaikovsky's deservedly popular piano concerto played by many of the world's most famous performers, so the 25-year-old has big boots to fill - but we are sure he is up to the task.
It is fair to say that Pictures at an Exhibition is a meeting of nations. The Frenchman Ravel's arrangement of the Russian Mussorgsky's masterpiece for piano has become a frequently played concert piece the world over.
