Italian baritone Renato Bruson, despite having passed his seventieth birthday, remains one of the world’s leading exponents of Verdi and more particularly, bel canto roles. He made his debut as Count Luna in 1961 and with it, entered world musical consciousness. In 2003, Hungarian audiences could enjoy him as Don Giovanni at the Miskolc International Opera Festival; two years later he enchanted them as William Tell. In 1992 Eszter Sümegi won the Luciano Pavarotti International Singing Competiti...on in Philadelphia and she launched her international career there as Ines in Donizetti’s La Favorita. Since 1993 she has been a member of the Hungarian State Opera House and been a guest performer in Vienna, Toronto, Paris, Bregenz and Frankfurt. South Korean tenor Alfred Kim enjoyed great success at international singing competitions, including victory at the Belvedere Competition in 1997 and the special prize at the Placido Domingo Singing Competition in 2002. He has worked regularly in his native South Korea and also in Germany, Italy, Canada and Sweden. Since 2005 he has been a member of the Wiesbaden State Theatre. Tichina Vaughn is an American mezzo-soprano with a tremendous reputation for her perfect voice and versatile artistry. Since 1998 she has been a member of the Stuttgart State Theatre. One of her lead roles is Azucena which she has performed all over the world to great acclaim. She has also worked throughout the globe as a concert singer. 1992 saw the two hundredth anniversary of the local musical theatre in Cluj, Romania, and in 1998, the independent Cluj Hungarian Opera celebrated its own fifty year jubilee. The high quality of the company’s productions is guaranteed by its director György Selmeczi. The conductor of this evening’s performance is Ádám Medveczky, who was runner up at the first International Conductor’s Competition of Hungarian Television in 1974. Since then, he has been a distinguished conductor also at the Hungarian State Opera House and has worked in virtually every country in the world.
