Bea Palya is an artist with genuine world music sensibilities. Originally a Hungarian folk singer, the songs she has written draw not only on her homeland and the surrounding region, but are also heavily influenced by Bulgarian and Gypsy folk music, Indian rhythms and jazz. Her first record to be released internationally also features French chansons, and she has since added Sephardic Jewish songs to her concert repertoire. Even all alone on the stage of the National Concert Hall, she is able to... reveal her most personal inner self, while she revisits the hits of her parents' youth with no shortage of irony and energy. After a string of recordings in quick succession, Bea Palya turned her attention to something new in 2011. Although she remains a singer first and foremost, writing has become an increasingly important form of expression over the years. In her childhood in the village of Bag, the bridge song and dance was among her favourites: “Why did the mistress send us, hair, golden hair? / To build a bridge for you, hair, golden hair / Why do you need a bridge, hair, golden hair? / For you to pass over it, hair, golden hair.” To the artist today, this motif represents the bridge between two phases of life, the connection between the performer and the audience, and the interplay between words and music. Just as she wrote the lyrics to many of her own songs, her music incorporates extracts from her new book, inspiring improvisation in the company of both familiar and new musicians. This concert will be a combination of old and new Palya songs, as well as fresh interpretations of songs that have played a pivotal role in her life, as well as in those of family members.
