In its 28 years of existence, the Csík Band has gained a level of popularity so lofty, it previously would have been unthinkable in Hungary's folk music world. In the first phase of their career, they played mainly dance house music, in a characteristic performance style built around three lead (prímás) fiddlers and both male and female vocals employed in multiple solos. Then they opened up a new chapter in the stories of their own oeuvre and of Hungarian world music when their landmark al...bum Senki nem ért semmit (Nobody Understands Anything) created a new style by arranging popular music to blend it into the fabric of folk music. With this novel approach, they proved that folk music could capture the hearts of urban youth who know no more of rural culture than what they have learned in school.
In short, the Csík Band made it to the top by removing barriers between folk and pop culture without yielding on the profundity of the folk music tradition, all while collaborating with such legends of Hungarian popular music as Gábor Presser, Levente Szörényi, János Bródy, Kati Kovács, László Földes, Tibor Kiss, András Lovasi and György Ferenczi, with whose band, Rackajam, new songs are currently in the works.
Fusion has also left its mark on Ferenczi's quarter-century career, with the difference that he approached folk music from the direction of blues, rock and funk. The similar thinking shared by the two bands has led to some memorable musical collaborations, engendering such 'hits' as A széki hobó. In the words of the Csík Band: 'the two groups met at the absolute best possible moment - right at the time when the creative energies, moving in different directions, were able to reinforce each other.'
All things considered, they are working on so many songs together that this will inevitably result in a qualitatively different sound. But this promise is not the slightest bit contradicted by the fact that the Csík Band's most popular 'independent' pieces are also indispensable elements in the programme.
