The István Baló Project Acoustic was formed in the autumn of 2015. The band leader and drummer wanted to use the knowledge and experience he had accumulated over a rich career in order to create his own compositions. One of the most characteristic elements of his work is that the soloists are given great freedom to complete improvisations that weave together defined points of departure and arrival - just as "the river flows along its bed".
"It took a long time for me to realise that it's not enough for me to feel free within the boundaries I have defined (arrival and departure); I also have to provide these points to any musicians I invite to play in my band. I believe this is important, as it makes it much easier to bring the dormant energy of the musicians to the surface." In addition to accepting the challenges of free improvisation, István Baló also realised that his group wouldn't operate with permanent members. This helps me... move beyond the difficulties of aligning everyone's schedule and also ensures that every single performance is full of surprises. Over the years, this decision has created an opportunity for a wide array of musicians to perform Baló's compositions, with their individual personalities adding a unique flavour to shared improvisations. Each time, the band leader experiences how the 'freshly arrived' musicians enjoy new and thrilling possibilities thanks to a creative musical process that is certainly a little different from the norm. The band's album Folyó a medrében (Flowing Wide) was released in 2018. The current members of the group are at least a generation younger than the eponymous leader. The youngest, Sámuel Baló, is the drummer's son. The longest-serving member, Péter Ajtai, has been with the group from the start.
