With its unusual line-up, the style of Mrs. Columbo is light and playful, yet also discerning and creative. Taking jazz as a starting point, the group mixes in stylistic elements of pop, rock and electronic music, opening up pathways between popular musical genres. Harmony, good humour and a feeling of togetherness radiate from the stage, hardly surprising when the band members are all good friends and love playing music together. Dorina Galambos, though always exuding charm and happiness,... can also produce tears with a sorrowful melody. The music flows and soars from the hands of pianist Fanni Sárközy, while steadiness and strength, combined with a feminine radiance, are the hallmarks of Zsófi Hudák's double bass playing. Drummer Norbert Kovács, literally the odd man out, is a permanent live guest, keeping the beat behind the lively trio of ladies. All members are highly trained, well known and acclaimed musicians in their own right. Since the band's formation, they have dazzled fans of jazz and other popular genres at numerous clubs, music and culinery festivals both at home and abroad. Their first album of cover versions, entitled [re]make up, immediately won a Fonogram Award in the category of "Hungarian Jazz Album of the Year.” Subsequently, Mrs. Columbo has recorded more and more of its own compositions, written jointly by the members of the group. One of the first of these, Játszd újra! (Play It Again!), was among the top 30 tunes to compete in the Hungarian heats of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, while the group also collected another Fonogram nomination.
These days, Mrs. Columbo perform self-composed tunes only, the very latest of which they present here for the Jazz Workshop audience, reflecting a range of sounds that is distinctly modern in outlook. Helping them out will be a pair of widely celebrated guests, Juli Fábián and András Hajós. The extraordinary production design will be provided courtesy of the internationally acclaimed Limelight Light Painting Group, whose 3D animations projected on stage incorporate not only installations specially created for the occasion, but the band's instruments as well.
