At this third international edition of the Jazz Showcase, and the seventh in all, one of the most unusual concerts promises to be the closing performance of the opening day, where the most important and celebrated figure in Turkish jazz, Okay Temiz, takes to the stage in his quintet Oriental Wind. A performer whose virtuosity on a standard drum kit is as astonishing as on traditional Turkish instruments or other exotic, mainly African and Brazilian percussion, Temiz played early in his career wi...th greats such as Dexter Gordon, George Russell and Clark Terry. Oriental Wind, which melds Turkish folk elements with African beats and jazz improvisation, was formed in 1974, and is thus celebrating four decades as a group. The original line-up featured Don Cherry, Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson, Lennart Aberg and Hacı Tekbilek. Having spent almost 30 years in Scandinavia, Temiz returned to Turkey in 1998, not least to get to know the new generation of young Turkish musicians and to take part in joint projects. News of his exuberantly dynamic, colourful and idiosyncratic productions reached the other side of the Atlantic, leading to the creation of the Istanbul Project, in which two veterans – Marcus Miller and Okay Temiz – joined with young American and Turkish musicians to dazzle the audience at the Istanbul Jazz Festival. Oriental Wind can be expected to do the same for listeners at the Festival Theatre. Presented by: Palace of Arts
