Steve Gadd is 70. He is celebrating this important anniversary with a world tour in the company of dear musical friends of the highest order. The drummer, who is one of the most popular and influential figures on what can broadly be defined as the jazz and pop scene, will be introducing material from 70 Strong, the second album from his band formed in 2013. The audience is sure to include many of those who fell in love with Gadd's unmistakably sensitive and pulsating playing style on recor...dings by Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Kate Bush, the Brecker Brothers, Chick Corea and Steely Dan.
Those hearing Gadd for the first time will be experiencing a chapter in jazz and popular music history, since both the drummer and his colleagues have worked with just about everyone that matters. Michael Landau has played guitar with Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd and Joni Mitchell. Larry Goldings has performed with the bands of Pat Metheny, Al Jarreau, Robben Ford, John Scofield and David Sanborn, while also contributing his Hammond mastery to the music of De La Soul, Tracy Chapman and Melody Gardot. Walt Fowler's trumpet playing has enriched projects by Frank Zappa, Ray Charles and Toto, while he has also served as orchestrator for the soundtracks to films such as Inception, X-Men and Pirates of the Caribbean. The senior member of the band, Jimmy Johnson, is well known for his work with James Taylor, Allan Holdsworth and Lee Ritenour, as well as for being one of the pioneers of the five-string bass guitar.
According to Gadd, the bar has been set even higher on 70 Strong than on the band's first album Gadditude, featuring a wide variety of musical styles with the soul is of course provided by improvisation born in the moment.
