If we imagine a volcano, we will probably be confronted with explosive power, an unstoppable flow of energy, boiling heat, unpredictable effects and an awe-inspiring, monumental presence. These are all things that the music made by the three musicians who currently make up Volcán may also invoke. Close friends for many years, they bring very rich musical pedigrees to the stage. They know every nuance of the colourful music of their homeland, Cuba, from where pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, acou...stic and electric bassist Jose Armando Gola and drummer Horacio "El Negro” Hernandez all began their global conquest. Rubalcaba was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in 1985, and a year later had the chance to accompany Charlie Haden and Paul Motian on a visit to Havana. It was through Haden that he appeared at a string of festivals, before going on to work with Al Di Meola and leading his own Grammy Award-winning trio. Besides Rubalcaba, Hernandez has performed with Michel Camilo in another explosive trio. With the help of Gola, Arturo Sandoval was able to raise his music to a higher level, as was another noteworthy young talent in Eldar Djangirov. Volcán is an irresistible Latin jazz-fusion group of musicians who are equals, whose instrumental juggling acts only scratch the surface of what they can do; beyond the complex rhythms, surprising forms and irresistibly exuberant solos, their music also finds room for elegant and lyrical melodies.
(Due to ill health, percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo is sadly unable to participate in the Volcán tour as previously advertised.)
