Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major “Pastorale”, op. 68 Symphony No. 5 in C minor, op. 67 Of all the great conductors, the career of Lorin Maazel was surely one of the most brilliant. He began as a child prodigy violinist, but between ages of nine and fifteen he conducted most of the leading American orchestras. He was eleven when Toscanini invited him to conduct the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic when he was twelve. He has served as m...usic director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, was general director and principal conductor of the Vienna State Opera, he led the Cleveland Orchestra and was the artistic director and chief conductor of the Berlin Deutsche Oper. Since 2002 he has been the music director of the New York Philharmonic. To date, he has conducted over one hundred and fifty orchestras in more than five thousand concerts and opera performances. Luckily for the audiences of the Palace of Arts, this is the third event within the last two years to have the chance to marvel at his art: In 2007 and May 2008 he conducted the New York Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic in Budapest, but he now arrives with an ensemble not yet well known in Hungary. In May 2006, he accepted the request to be the music director emeritus of the Symphonica Toscanini, which comprises of over a hundred talented young musicians, most of whom are Italian. In 2007 they gave concerts around the world to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the great maestro who gives the ensemble his name, as well as the one hundred and fortieth anniversary of his birth. They toured the United States, Morocco, Japan, South America and Israel. They also performed all of Beethoven’s symphonies within a concert series in Rome, where they are based.
