Verdi wrote the Libera me movement first which h...e intended as a contribution to a requiem mass for Rossini. Other contemporary composers promised to contribute the other movements. Eventually though they lost interest and the plan came to nothing. Years later, Verdi expanded and completed the work and dedicated it to the memory of Manzoni.
