Liars, layabouts and good-for-nothings. Guy Ritchie's early films are full of them and helped define the director's style. Brazen figures from the underworld who are constantly devising countless devious schemes in the hope of a grand pay-off. They do so much scheming that in the end they only hurt themselves. Snatch is probably the best example of his work. Everyone in it is after a big piece of business, from wandering Gypsies to a Manhattan diamond wholesaler, a Ukraine mafioso and some hapless gangsters. In the end they'll either pull it off, or they won't.
Guy Ritchie bears many similarities to Tarantino, though there is one not insignificant distinction: while the latter's stories are weaved together with an inconceivably intricate web of quotes and references, Ritchie tackles the language, gestures, feelings and motivations of his characters in the most direct way possible. He is also superb at directing his actors. This much was clear in his first full-length movie, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The film kickstarted the careers of ...Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones. In Snatch they are joined by Brad Pitt and Benicio del Toro. The plot has two main threads. The first centres around a huge stolen diamond, the second on a racket that organises fixed boxing matches. As you might have guessed, sooner or later, the two stories collide. The whole thing is exceptionally bloody and funny. Yet Snatch also makes clever use of the wordplay typical of British films while featuring the kind of elementary visual gags that wouldn't look out of place in a silent comedy film.
